Cinemas are Finally Opening Next Month — Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Cinemas in Metro Manila are finally allowed to operate after being closed for a year and seven months. Hear that? That’s the excited cheer of cinephiles, couples, and barkadas all waiting for this day to come. And for good reason — cinemas opening mean another step toward (new) normalcy or at least to being able to watch the latest Marvel blockbuster on the big screen. So what do you need to know to gear up for your trip to the theaters? Which cinemas in Metro Manila will be reopening come November?

Fully vaccinated with social distancing

For starters, only those who are fully vaccinated will be allowed inside theaters. The total capacity is also limited to 30% under Alert Level 3. Aside from this, the Inter-Agency Task Force along with The Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP) has laid down ground rules for moviegoers. These protocols are called “Sa Sine Safe Ka.” For moviegoers, it means body temperature checks before entering the cinema, vaccination card for two complete doses, and face masks and face shields.

No eating allowed

Unfortunately, while we get our theater privileges back, we don’t get it back in full. Eating is not allowed inside anymore so you’ll have to watch these blockbusters snack-free. Bummer but it’s a small sacrifice to pay, right?

Strict safety and sanitary measures for malls

In addition to accommodating only fully vaccinated moviegoers, theaters are also primed with the strictest sanitary measures. CEAP requires them to implement the following:

  • Theaters will implement “socially distanced seating,” even for moviegoers who are entering together (two seats apart)
  • Contactless and cashless transactions to be encouraged during ticket-purchasing
  • Improved air ventilation
  • Availability of hand sanitizers at every cinema entrance
  • Mandatory hand-washing every 30 minutes for cinema employees
  • Deep cleaning of surfaces, chairs between screenings

Save the date

As for the opening date, CEAP posted a teaser that told everyone to mark their calendars for November 10. That’s when most cinemas in the metro will finally be opening their doors. Protocols further vary depending on malls but so far, here are the ones set to open soon on November 10:
